AI Control Plane
A practical framework for the identity, policy, observability, approval, audit, and cost controls required to operate AI agents at enterprise scale.
AI agents need more than prompts and policies.
They need a control plane.
As AI systems move from answering questions to taking action, enterprises need a way to manage identity, permissions, policy, observability, approvals, audit, cost, and rollback across human and machine workflows.
The core idea
Every enterprise AI agent should be answerable to a control model:
- Who owns it?
- What identity does it use?
- What data can it access?
- What tools can it call?
- What actions require approval?
- What evidence does it preserve?
- What happens when it makes a mistake?
- How is cost, latency, and quality measured?
Without a control plane, AI adoption becomes fragmented.
Teams move faster, but leaders lose visibility.

The AI Control Plane includes
1. Identity
Every agent needs a clear identity, owner, scope, and purpose.
2. Access
Agents should only access the data, tools, and systems required for their approved role.
3. Policy
Policies define what agents may do, what they may recommend, what they may automate, and what they may never do.
4. Human approval
Not every action should be automated. The control plane defines approval gates based on risk, reversibility, sensitivity, and business impact.
5. Observability
Leaders need visibility into agent activity, decisions, outputs, errors, costs, latency, and escalation patterns.
6. Audit
Every meaningful action should preserve evidence: prompt, context, data used, tools called, decision path, approval, and outcome.
7. Rollback and incident response
Agents will fail. The enterprise needs a way to stop, reverse, investigate, and improve the system.

Why this matters
The more capable AI agents become, the more leverage they create.
But leverage without control is risk.
The AI Control Plane is how leaders allow autonomy to scale without surrendering accountability.
